Still not convinced that second shift is right for you? Let’s break down the benefits a little further.

You can make more money.

It varies from company to company, but many companies pay a “premium” or shift differential to second shift workers. This rate can be as much as a 10% increase to your pay rate.

You can schedule your work schedule around your life.

Working second shift provides you with most of your day for yourself. This allows you the flexibility to complete all the things that those working first shift either struggle to complete or must take time off to accomplish.

You can make all your appointments, spend time with your kids in the summer or take your kids to school each day. Maybe you have other life goals such as starting a side hustle or attending school.

Spend leisurely mornings having coffee, breakfast, or going to the gym in the daylight.

Enjoying a slower passed morning that doesn’t have to start before the sun is a great advantage for second shift workers. You can maintain a solid morning routine and even gym schedule without having to compete with the rush of getting out the door or plan your workout based on all the early birds in the gym.

You want advancement opportunities.

With fewer people working on 2nd shift, you may have the opportunity to do more than you would during the day. In manufacturing jobs, this involves getting more experience on more machines and processes. If you’re just starting out, this is a great way to jumpstart your career. Working in more parts of the facility gets you more familiar with different machines and tools and shows your employer that you’re versatile and willing to learn.

You don’t want to be distracted and want to focus on your work.

During the second shift, there tend to be fewer distractions from those in the company working 9-5 jobs. Sales teams, administration, and other employees typically aren’t in the office during the second shift, allowing you to focus on your work. Motivated second shift employees can oftentimes be more productive due to fewer distractions during their day.
